“The Paint Stripper”

Oil on Canvas

Estimated
retail value:

$ 2,000.

Bernie Major http://www.bernardmajor.com/, a long-time tenor saxophone player in the Langley Concert Band, raffled his painting "The Paint Stripper" to raise funds for the Matthew David Johnston Memorial Scholarship at Langley Community Music School http://www.langleymusic.com/.  Over seven hundred dollars was raised for the cause and Mary Leake, a bass clarinetist in the band, was the lucky recipient of the painting.  Thank you, Bernie . . . and congratulations Mary!

Ladner Bandfest

In early June, Langley Concert Band performed at the eighth annual Ladner Bandfest http://ladnerbandfest.org/ to the delight of many concert goers.

Hosted by Delta Music Makers http://www.deltamusicmakers.org/, this two-day event had twenty-one groups performing.  Thankfully the weather gods cooperated and audiences, complete with lawn chairs, picnic baskets and smiling faces, enjoyed a glorious weekend of outstanding music and lovely weather!

Band Trip to Merritt

At the end of May 2012, the Langley Concert Band, directed by Brenda Wilson, had the opportunity to travel to Merritt to play a joint concert in Merritt Rotary Park Bandstand with the Nicola Valley Community Band, lead by director Colin Kerridge.

Twenty-one members of the band were able to make the trip and enjoy the hospitality of the Nicola Valley members, which included a fascinating tour of Nicola Valley.  One of their band members, Steve Rose, supplied and drove our tour bus.

We lunched at his family’s historic Quilchena Hotel, which is celebrating its hundreth anniversary this year, http://www.quilchena.com/.  We also visited the family’s homestead ranch and the Laurie Guichon Memorial Grassland Interpretive Site http://www.members.shaw.ca/swawrykow/02grass2.htm.

We look forward to hosting the Nicola Valley Community Band next spring, sharing with them the sights and sounds (and wineries) of Langley.  Their visit, on the last weekend of May 2013, will culminate in a joint concert.
